MUA Luxe Matte Lipsticks Review and swatches

MUA is one of those drugstore brands which is completely known for its super affordable products. And while there are a good number of products (usually the powder products) that I love from this brand, there are a heck of a lot of misses.

MUA launched their LUXE range nearly 2 years ago now, aimed to be slightly more expensive than their normal range, and with slightly more luxurious packaging, and (hopefully) products. They have launched a new range of lipsticks to this range, there are 12 shades to the range, and the store I went into had 8 of them – so I picked them all up.

At £3 a lipstick, they’re super affordable, and their packaging is actually super weighty, with the lid weighing actually A LOT. I like the packaging, the gold and the geometric black pattern looks super pretty together, and they look really nice on the side of your room. The shape of the lipstick is … different. I can see what they were trying to do (you know, be different), but I honestly don’t get the point. It wears away after only a few applications, and it doesn’t make the lipstick easier to apply than the normal lipstick shape, if anything, it’s harder.

The colour selection is generically neutral, but a lot of the undertones to these lipsticks really don’t suit me, and really wouldn’t be something I would wear. In the swatches (from right to left) I have the colours: one, two, three, five, six, seven, ten, and twelve (inspirational names right?). The only two colours I see myself keeping (because they’re the only shade I’ll ever wear) are three and seven.. which is pretty ridiculous.

The formula is super matte, pigmented, there is no colour transfer AT ALL, they’re fairly long lasting, and they look ok on the lips. However they are drying a.f., it’s actually uncomfortable after like an hour, and you feel like you want to take it off. Because it’s so drying it drags as you apply it to your lips, but other than that they’re quite easy to apply. I would say use a lip balm under, or a lip gloss over, it makes it a lot more comfortable.

Personally, for a similar price range, Collection have nicer lipsticks, and while they’re pigmented and there are the odd nice shades in there, I wouldn’t go round shouting their praises, but they’re also not terrible. Plus, they’re only £3?! So I feel like I can’t judge too harshly.

Have you tried these? If so, what are your thoughts?

  1. Great review, I love matte lipsticks but I agree that MUA don’t have amazing lipsticks. For £3 though I can’t say I expected fabulous products! X
