I remember looking up Zoe Sugg’s channel all those years ago after I saw her on Great British Bake Off because I was curious about what she did. I instantly fell in love, not so much with her, but with the world. As someone who had never really worn makeup before, and had only ever used YouTube to watch people cover pop songs (and actually do some myself – but that is a different story), I found myself instantly addicted to both the beauty world and the YouTube world. To say I was hooked was probably an understatement.
Back in April last year I decided I would take the plunge and start a channel myself. Yes, I was awkward, and my first video was a tad dodge, and yes my channel is still very small (but it seems to be growing well at the moment), but I don’t regret the decision at all. I’m more confident and happy in myself than I have ever been. You would have thought staring at yourself for hours while editing would be off-putting, but I’ve found it somewhat empowering (as long as that doesn’t sound vain). I’ve become more comfortable in front of the camera, and this has transferred into my everyday life. I am so much more confident in myself and round other people, and obviously I just have been growing up in general, this experience really has changed me.
I’ve made some great friends through YouTube, and we’re planning to meet up very soon, and while they obviously don’t know every detail of my life, I feel like I’ve known them forever (as I watch their channels). I think it’s incredible that we live in an age where you can meet people from across the country and the World!
Yes, my channel is small, and yes, I would love it to grow, but whatever happens I wouldn’t change it for the world. If any of you are uhming and ahhing about starting a channel. Start one. Now. It took me a few months before I was happy with my first video, but realistically no one will really care that much. Just get yourself out there, and the more your record, the more comfortable you will be. If you want to feel better, watch some of the really old videos from your favourite vloggers, their videos will be a tad ‘dodge’ too!
